“WHERE’S LAYLA?” Ken said to the john.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I was so scared. I left the key inside.”

Layla’s screams, coming from the last unit, filled the air as yet another explosion went off.

“Stay with Gran,” Ken said to the others before heading toward the motel. Flames now engulfed the building. The last unit was Layla’s, and the doorway was on fire. Ken raced through it and to the bed, where Layla was naked and handcuffed to the headboard.

“The key’s on the nightstand to the right!” Layla said.

Smoke and flames began to fill the room as Ken grabbed the key and unlocked the cuffs. In one move, he wrapped Layla in a blanket to protect her from the flames and carried her through the doorway just as it collapsed behind them. He didn’t stop until he got to the others with Layla, who was crying. Fire trucks and police cars started arriving on the scene. Mason just stared at the flames in shock. What next? he thought.
